Dale brought his four-wheel drive to a stop outside a cabin that was partially hidden from view by evergreens. Though he had heard about it from other agents, Jesse had never been to Dale’s secluded retirement home. He pushed open his own door and hurried around to Abigail’s side. Once again, she’d handled herself like a champion.

Jesse held the door for Abigail while she slid out and looked around. Dale was already headed up the trail toward the cabin.

Dale yelled over his shoulder, “Both of you can grab a couple of logs on your way in. I’ll get a fire started.”

Abigail glanced around. “This looks really primitive...and far away from everything.”

Jesse rested his hand on her shoulder. “I’m sure Dale has made the place very livable.”

Abigail made her way up the trail, where flat rocks had been pressed into the dirt to create a path.

Once they were on the cabin’s porch, Jesse said, “Hold your hands out in front of you. I’ll load you up with logs.”

Abigail obliged and Jesse placed several logs in her C-shaped arms. “Let me know when it’s heavy enough for you.”

“I’m starting to see a theme here.” Abigail turned slightly toward the cabin door.

“What do you mean?”

“Dale is another isolated loner. Like the hermit and Edward and even that widow.”

“Some people just choose to be alone for whatever reason.” Dale hadn’t always lived alone. A painful divorce shortly before he retired had left the man disillusioned. “Dale has two grown sons who come out here all the time. He’s in touch with lots of agents still in the field. Sometimes pain drives your life in a particular direction.” He understood that more than anyone.

“I know. After Brent, I thought about going up in the mountains just living by myself, but you have to go on, right? You have to find some way to heal.” She looked off in the distance. “I have to figure out what my life is going to look like without him and the plans we made together.”

“Right.” Jesse picked up several logs until his own arms were full. As he watched Abigail disappear inside the cabin, it occurred to him that it was possible to be living in a city and still be living in isolation. It was what he had done since Melissa’s death.

He checked the surrounding woods for any signs of movement and listened for a moment. Confident that they had not been followed, he stepped inside. The cabin was one large room with a loft. One corner was dedicated to computers and computer parts, and another contained a refrigerator and stove. On the other side of the room, Dale had already started a fire in the fireplace. Jesse dumped his firewood and plopped down on a worn leather couch that faced the fire.

He pulled the hard drive he’d been hauling around out of his pocket. “Can we get this installed and see what’s on it?” Jesse still didn’t have a clear plan as to whom he could trust with the information on the drive.
